At the Forum’s annual meeting in January 2021, Schwab emphasized that building trust would be a key factor in the success of his Great Reset, signaling to attendees that the already massive PR campaign would need to be expanded even further. The story of Klaus Schwab’s father, Eugen Schwab, who ran the Nazi-backed German branch of a Swiss engineering firm that had been a major military contractor during the war, is particularly revealing. That company, Escher-Wyss, also used forced laborers to produce machinery for the Nazi war effort and also supported Nazi efforts to produce heavy water for their nuclear program. Born on March 30, 1938 in Ravensburg, Germany, Klaus Schwab was the eldest child in a normal nuclear family. Between 1945 and 1947, Klaus attended elementary school in Au, Germany. In a 2006 interview with the Irish Times, Klaus Schwab recalled, “After the war, I was chairman of the Franco-German National Youth Association. My heroes were Adenauer, De Gasperi and De Gaulle.” Klaus Schwab and his younger brother, Urs Reiner Schwab, were both to follow in the footsteps of their grandfather Gottfried and their father Eugen, initially training as mechanical engineers. Klaus’ father had told the young Schwab that if he wanted to make a difference in the world, he should train as a mechanical engineer. But this was to be only the beginning of Schwab’s comprehensive education. Klaus attended the Spohn High School in Ravensburg between 1949 and 1957, graduating with the Abitur. Between 1958 and 1962, Klaus worked for various engineering firms and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich in 1962. The following year, he also completed a degree in economics at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. From 1963 to 1966, Klaus worked as assistant to the general director of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) in Frankfurt. In 1965, Klaus received his doctorate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich with a dissertation on “The Longer-Term Export Credit as a Business Problem in Mechanical Engineering.” In 1966, he received a doctorate in engineering from ETH Zurich. By this time, Klaus’ father, Eugen Schwab, had succeeded in rising to higher circles. Having already been a well-known figure in Ravensburg before the war as managing director of Escher-Wyss, he finally succeeded in rising to the position of president of the Ravensburg Chamber of Commerce. In 1966, at the founding of the German Committee for the Splügen Rail Tunnel, Eugen Schwab defined the establishment of this committee as a project “that would create a better and faster connection for large circles in our Europe, which is growing together, and thus offer new opportunities for cultural, economic and social development.” Klaus Schwab earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland in 1967. In the 2006 Irish Times article, Klaus talks about this time as being very important in the formation of his current ideological thinking: “Years later, when I returned from the U.S. after studying at Harvard, there were two events that had a decisive influence on me: (1) The book The American Challenge by Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber, which theorized that Europe would lose to the U.S. because European management methods were inferior to those of the U.S.; (2) And this is relevant to Ireland – that the Europe of Six became the Europe of Nine.” It was these two events that put Klaus Schwab’s focus entirely on changing management. The foundation of the World Economic Forum In 1970, the young upstart Klaus Schwab wrote to the European Commission asking for help in establishing a “non-commercial think tank for European business leaders.” The European Commission would provide patronage and send French politician Raymond Barre as the forum’s “intellectual mentor.” Raymond Barre, who at the time was European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, later became French prime minister and was accused of making anti-Semitic remarks while in office. So Schwab left Escher-Wyss in 1970 to organize a two-week conference for business managers. In 1971, the first meeting of the World Economic Forum – then called the European Management Symposium – was held in Davos, Switzerland.
